New Discoveries in the Sustainable City: A Joint Tour by HCHS and Tama High School
Following the visit of Gyeonggi Buk High School from Korea, Kanagawa Tama High School Japan paid a subsequent visit. On the morning of 7 January 2026, Principal Shunsuke Umeda led 38 members of Tama High school, starting a one-day cultural and academic event. This event is a part of the ongoing friendship between the two schools, aiming to help students broaden their horizons and strengthen their multicultural competence with mutual visits.
The welcoming ceremony began in the Kendo Hall, starting with speeches from principals of both schools. Both principles encouraged students to make use of the opportunity to broaden their horizons and forge international friendships. The Mulin Picket team performed with exceptional spear control and swordsmanship, firing up the atmosphere. The finale was a performance of a Hakka folk song“Tian Gong Luo Shui”(May the God of the Sky Bless Us with Rain) by the students from the dialect courses. In return, Tama High School sang “君を乗せ” (Carrying You) from Ghibli movie Castle in the Sky and performed a traditional dance from the Ainu people, an indigenous ethnic group in Hokkaido. Both performances received a round of enthusiastic applause.
After the welcoming ceremony, student ambassadors gave the guests a tour of Hsinchu High School, providing detailed introductions and taking group photos at some of the most notable spots in the school. Once the tour had ended, students gathered back in the Kendo Hall. Students on the “HCHS discussion works" course, as well as the club members of astronomy, biology, medicine, and science clubs introduced their research and work to the Japanese students and teachers, showcasing the power of international academic exchange. For lunch, students were led to the Zhi Shan building to enjoy High School’s local cuisine – bento(lunch box) and a famous Taiwanese drink–bubble milk tea.
In the afternoon, participants from both schools headed to Hsinchu downtown for a cultural exploration themed about SDGs 11 “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. To start, an introduction to the historical heritage of Changhe Mazu and the Shuixian Cultural Relics Museum was given at Changhe Temple. The students were then split into three groups, and set off to explore the old city district along different routes. Members of the English debate club provided guides on attractions, including the North Gate Historic Site, City God Temple, Zheng Family Ancestral Hall, Beida Church, Hsinchu Prefectural Hall, and the Image Museum. All the participants in the event took a group photo at the final stop – YingXi Gate. An interesting episode occurred when an HCHS student took out his guitar and performed a solo for a Tama High School student, which left some laughter and an unforgettable experience. The whole event ended at four o'clock. Despite the brief amount of time, students from both schools left laughter echoing and had several great memories. We look forward to meeting again next year.
