On the morning of Monday, October 28th, a delegation of approximately 14 students and teachers from Germany's Wieland Gymnasium, led by Ji Bin and Valentin, visited our school for a one-week cultural exchange program. This visit marked the first-ever collaboration between Wieland Gymnasium and our institution.
The group, including 12 students from Wieland Gymnasium, arrived at the Kendo Building, accompanied by their enthusiastic host families. During the welcome ceremony, Principal Guo Zhenxiang delivered a speech in fluent English, emphasizing the significance of this cultural exchange and extending a warm welcome. The principal of Wieland Gymnasium expressed his gratitude and hopes for the program through a pre-recorded video message. The ceremony commenced with an English presentation by the ceremonial hosting team, highlighting the unique charm, cuisine of Hsinchu City, and the culture of Hsinchu High School. This was followed by a campus tour and a cultural challenge activity. To enhance the experience, the hosting team organized a tour featuring four designated stops and cultural activities such as crafting Hakka tung blossom fans, shuttlecocks, and paper lanterns.
In the afternoon, an exhilarating Taiwan-Germany soccer exchange match took place. Our school’s soccer team showcased their teamwork and strategic gameplay, breaking through the German team’s defense with determination. The German students countered with their refined footwork, creating a thrilling back-and-forth match that captivated both participants and spectators. The students watching from the sidelines were deeply inspired by the players' dedication and competitive spirit.
On Tuesday, after a sightseeing tour of Hsinchu City, a special German Culture Day event was held on the afternoon of October 30th. Organized by the ceremonial team and various school clubs, the event began with a performance of a traditional folk song from the Biberach region called “Shooting Festival,” sung by the choir, orchestra, and German students. The harmonious combination of orchestral music and choral voices enchanted all attendees.
The Culture Day event was divided into two phases. The first phase featured six themed challenge stations: Youth Pop Culture, German Hometown Culture, German Educational System, 100 Questions About Germany, German Folk Dance, and a German-themed Book Exhibition. Among the highlights was the interactive Kahoot quiz, “100 Questions About Germany,” where students learned fascinating facts about Germany in a fun and engaging atmosphere. Another standout activity was the display of traditional German attire, with German students dressed in Dirndl and Lederhosen, creating a vibrant, festive atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional German village.
The event attracted 150 staff members and over 200 students. Participants who completed the challenges were rewarded with commemorative coins and treated to German delicacies prepared by the Culinary Club, combining cultural knowledge and cuisine for a delightful experience.
The second phase of the event showcased street performances by eight student groups. The dance club delivered an electrifying performance with rhythmically precise movements, while the guitar club performed soothing melodies that resonated with the audience. The hip-hop club energized the crowd with freestyle routines and infectious beats, and the drill team captivated everyone with their synchronized gun and sword techniques. Additional highlights included performances by the traditional Chinese music club, balloon art by the magic club, and live art demonstrations by the animation club, creating an immersive cultural experience. Despite light rain, the audience's enthusiasm remained undeterred.
{C}Ms. Luo Sufen, the lead coordinator of the event, shared her thoughts on the design of German Culture Day. She noted that this was the third edition of Hsinchu High School's “World Culture Center” series, and it was the first time German students took the lead. This gave them the opportunity to present their culture firsthand, providing insights beyond textbooks. She explained that street performances, a common feature in European daily life, inspired the inclusion of student performers. This collaboration between Taiwanese and German students fostered an unforgettable cultural exchange and created cherished memories for all involved.
